On Cleveland.com, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson writes, “This market system gives renewable energy companies an incentive to innovate, compete, and create sustainable jobs. Government mandates just give renewable energy companies an incentive to lobby government officials. Mandates in effect subsidize special interests at the expense of all Ohioans.”
The Buckeye Institute commented on newly released unemployment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Ohio’s labor market had a good year in 2017 and rang in the New Year with strong economic numbers. Every employment measure in 2017 ended in positive territory. Unemployment is down once again to 4.7 percent, down from 4.8 percent in November, and down from five percent at the end of 2016.”
Hard to believe but 2018 is already here and it is time to once again celebrate Ohio’s students! Next week will be the eighth National School Choice Week. It is the largest celebration of the many opportunities and choices that are now available for students, and their families, to find an education that works best for them – not the education bureaucracy.
When President Bill Clinton signed welfare reform into law, many critics warned of impending calamity for welfare recipients. Individuals on welfare would be unable to comply with work requirements and would face dire poverty. These critics underestimated the ability of welfare recipients to find work and stay employed. Today, the debate is over the amount of gains welfare recipients who returned to work made, not whether or not they fell into dire poverty. Many recipients, particularly women, made large strides in the work force and increased their family income by work. It appears, this debate is going to be repeated, this time over Medicaid work requirements.
The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on the economic impact of Ohio’s renewable portfolio standards (RPS). “The RPS raises electricity prices for businesses, costing them money that they might have otherwise spent producing goods and creating jobs…[W]e must face the cold economic fact that continuing Ohio’s ‘march up Mandate Mountain’ will cost thousands of future jobs and billions of dollars.”
Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer at The Buckeye Institute and a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, issued a statement after attending the oral arguments in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute, saying, “This case hinges on the question of whether states have the authority to take reasonable steps to ensure the accuracy of their voter rolls, which is critical to ensuring the integrity of elections.”
According to United Van Lines 2017 National Movers Study, Ohio ranked number 7 nationally for the most out of state moves. And an Atlas report shows that for the 10th consecutive year more people are moving out of Ohio than into Ohio. Ohio is literally moving in the wrong direction!
The Buckeye Institute commented on newly released unemployment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “In the last report of the year, the Ohio employment report was naughty and nice. The nice part was the unemployment rate falling…The naughty part is the payroll survey reported a decline of 3,300 private-sector jobs.”
Ohio ranks 35th out of all 50 states in this year’s Economic Freedom of North America report, released by The Buckeye Institute in partnership with Canada’s Fraser Institute. The report ranks every state and province in North America based on economic freedom as measured by government spending, taxation, and labor market restrictions. “The news is mixed for Ohio. The state has moved up a few spots this year, mostly due to Governor John Kasich’s tax reform efforts in 2015. Yet, overall Ohio still languishes in the bottom third of states…”
