The Buckeye Institute: Higher Education Reform Lays a Solid Foundation for Ohio’s Future

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Higher Education Committee on policies in Ohio Senate Bill 83, which, if adopted, would lay a solid foundation for Ohio’s future. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, praised America’s higher education system, pointing out that it “has long been the envy of the world,” and noted policies in Senate Bill 83 that could “help address some of the problems plaguing Ohio’s higher education system.”

The Buckeye Institute Recommends Greater Property Tax Transparency

In a new policy memo, Property Tax Transparency: What Are We Paying For, The Buckeye Institute recommends that Ohio follow the example of Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano and adopt an easy-to-use online database that shows all tax levies that apply to individual parcels of property, such as Franklin County’s Levy Estimator. This tool “helps citizens better understand what their local governments cost, so they can make better, more informed decisions the next time a levy appears on the ballot.”

The Buckeye Institute reacted to the ruling by Ohio’s Fifth District Court of Appeals in Doe v. Columbus granting Buckeye’s request to dismiss the city of Columbus’ appeal of Judge Gormley’s April 25 ruling, which granted Buckeye’s request for a preliminary injunction. “The Fifth District’s ruling is a victory for The Buckeye Institute and its clients, and all residents of Columbus who want to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms.”

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in Relentless v. U.S. Department of Commerce, asking the court to overturn Chevron and put an end to judicial deference to executive agencies’ interpretation of the law. “The practice of courts relying on agencies to interpret the law has proven to be dysfunctional and inconsistent with our constitutional system. It is time for the Supreme Court to throw Chevron overboard.”

The Buckeye Institute Appeals Union Wage Theft Case

The Buckeye Institute filed its appeal in Darling v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) with Ohio’s Tenth District Court of Appeals on behalf of five hardworking Ohio public employees who had money illegally taken out of their paychecks— for months, and in some cases, years—by their employers and given to a government union. “Ohio Supreme Court precedent has given common pleas courts jurisdiction to decide private contractual disputes like the ones presented in Darling v. AFSCME.”

Buckeye Research Casts Doubt on Value of Knox County’s Solar Deal for Taxpayers

Frasier Solar has promised Knox County residents that local schools and townships will receive more than a million dollars per year if the county declines to collect property taxes from Frasier’s solar farms. Given the size of the windfall, Knox County is eager to waive Frasier Solar’s property tax bill. However, an analysis by The Buckeye Institute shows that Ohio’s statutory maximum rates for such “payment-in-lieu-of-taxes” (PILOT) deals may well be too low for such a deal to make sense for the county’s taxpayers.

The Buckeye Institute Calls on SCOTUS to Tell States They Cannot Ignore the Constitution

The Buckeye Institute joined an amicus brief filed in DeVillier v. Texas, calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reaffirm the constitutional right to seek just compensation in federal court when the government takes private property. “History teaches—and the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed—that the Fifth Amendment’s just compensation clause is self-executing. That means that Congress does not need to pass a law requiring states to follow the Fifth Amendment.”

The Buckeye Institute & NFIB to SCOTUS: Stop Governments from Using Permits to Extort Money from Citizens

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Sheetz v. The National Federation of Independent Business joined The Buckeye Institute in filing the brief.
