Happy New Year: pay more to Uncle Sam or what the fiscal cliff means: Part One

Unless the impasse in Washington is resolved soon, America will go over the so-called “Fiscal Cliff.” We’ve all heard the term, but what exactly is the “Fiscal Cliff”? The “Fiscal Cliff” is a combination of massive tax increases as well as large scale, but indiscriminate Federal spending cuts that are due to come into effect on January 1, 2013. The result would be higher taxes and job losses for Ohioans and the nation.

Right to Work “works”

MediaTrackers Ohio has an excellent post highlighting some of the talking points being used by opponents of bringing Right to Work to Ohio. None of it is surprising given that the group responsible, We are Ohio, receives the vast majority of its funding from unions. The problem that the unions and union-funded advocacy groups have is that the evidence that Right to Work laws (RTW) lead to job creation is overwhelming.

Governor Kasich has it right on Obamacare

Governor John Kasich is expected to opt not to set up a state exchange. This is the right decision for Ohio. The President’s health care law is unworkable and unsustainable. Rejecting the health insurance exchanges, and equally as important the Medicaid expansion, are two opportunities states have to push back on this law and instead push forward on a better health reform agenda for Ohio.

“Nuclear war, twinkies and unions”

Nuclear Armageddon? No problem. Twinkies, as the old joke used to go, could survive it (along with cockroaches). Sadly, it appears these seemingly robust treats that appeal to the sweet tooth in us all look to be nearing their final days. Fans better stock up now because all those pink Sno-Balls and Ding Dongs may also be joining Twinkies in the ash heap of history now that the company that makes them, Hostess Brands, is looking to shut down.

Ohio can help US redraw world energy map IF regs don’t stand in the way

The US stands on the cusp of potentially changing the world’s energy map according to the International Energy Agency, and within the US Ohio should become a leader. This is largely due to the shale gas boom that everyone is reading about. Unfortunately, this boom could easily stall for any number of reasons, including policies that emanate from Washington, DC.
