“On data privacy, look to the states and not to Europe for solutions”

Following the release of its new policy report, Key Principles for State Data Privacy Laws, The Buckeye Institute takes to the pages of The Hill to offer a free-market approach to data privacy laws. “More than two decades of Washington’s inaction on data privacy prove that whatever Congress may say about the subject, it cannot be trusted to pass responsible, comprehensive data privacy rules. And certainly not in time to save the country from a patchwork of ham-fisted European-style laws.”

California’s Big Oil Lawsuit Bites the Hand that Feeds the State

At RealClearPolicy, The Buckeye Institute exposes California’s hostility to an oil and gas industry that Californians rely on for more than 70 percent of their energy needs. “Without big oil, California will soon be entirely dependent on expensive foreign crude. And for Governor Newsom, that seems to be a feature, not a bug. Joining a long series of misguided policies, pledges, and commitments, his lawsuit is just the latest skirmish in the state’s multi-theater war on U.S. oil.”

Alaska State Employees Association urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case and allow states to adopt commonsense policies that inform public employees of their constitutionally protected Janus rights to quit government unions and stop paying union dues. “This case gives the court the opportunity to clarify its Janus decision and allow states to provide workers with the information they need to make well-informed decisions regarding union membership.”

The Buckeye Institute Secures Victory for School Bus Driver in Union Wage Theft Case

The Buckeye Institute secured a victory for David Krizon, Buckeye’s client in Krizon v. Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE), who had money illegally taken out of his paycheck by his employer and given to a government union. In settling the case, OAPSE acknowledged that Mr. Krizon had quit the union and refunded all the money deducted from his paychecks. “This victory reaffirms the principle that public workers can’t be required to pay dues to unions after they quit the union.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Must Protect Public Dollars from Risky Spending

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate General Government Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 158, which protects local taxpayers from unaccountable, unelected boards proposing risky spending projects. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, noted that the “so-called ‘People’s Budget’ proposal” on the November ballot in Cleveland would allow an unelected, unaccountable board of citizens to spend $14 million in taxpayer dollars “without public accountability or oversight.”
