The Buckeye Institute Takes D.C. Area ANC Commissioners to Court

The Buckeye Institute filed a new lawsuit on behalf of Eric Flannery, the owner of The Big Board, a neighborhood bar and grill located in our nation’s capital, charging that members of the 6C Advisory Neighborhood Commission conspired to protest the renewal of The Big Board’s liquor license to punish Mr. Flannery because he spoke out against D.C.’s pandemic-era shutdown orders. Flannery v. Eckenwiler was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

“Millions are leaving Medicaid, and that’s a good thing”

In The Hill, The Buckeye Institute offers recommendations on how states should approach Medicaid redetermination, which is required now that the federal Covid health emergency is over. “States cannot stop eligibility reviews — they have a duty to keep Medicaid solvent for those who need it. A necessary step toward doing this is to remove ineligible enrollees who have gone back to work and now exceed the Medicaid income threshold.”

“The Buckeye Institute: Proposed Fed Rule Would Increase Energy Prices, Risk U.S. Energy Security”

As Americans face ever higher prices at the gas pump, The Buckeye Institute filed public comments detailing how a proposed U.S. Bureau of Land Management rule would lead to higher energy prices and risk U.S. energy security. “Americans are already paying record prices at the pump, and the Biden administration’s proposed rule will only increase prices further, making it harder for struggling Americans to make ends meet.”

The Buckeye Institute Joins Legal Brief Opposing Race-Based Discrimination in High School Admissions Case

The Buckeye Institute joined Mountain States Legal Foundation in filing an amicus brief in Coalition for TJ v. Fairfax County School Board, calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case and find that the school board’s use of race to determine admissions to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) violates the equal protect clause of the U.S. Constitution. “This case gives the high court the opportunity to make it clear that Students for Fair Admissions applies to all educational institutions, including TJ.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Should Eliminate the Tax Penalty for Marriage

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Ways and Means Committee on the policies in House Bill 199, which eliminates the marriage penalty tax in Ohio’s tax code. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, noted that although Ohio needs “comprehensive tax and spending reform,” House Bill 199 corrects a problem in Ohio’s tax code that results in married couples often paying “more in taxes than they would if they filed separately.”

Ohio is Model for Regulatory Reform

On RealClearPolicy, The Buckeye Institute touts Ohio’s success on regulatory reform. By adopting Buckeye-championed policies, Ohio has established itself as a national leader in cutting government regulations that “get in the way of new careers,” “keep new products from coming to market,” and “raise the prices of virtually everything we buy and sell.” For other states ready to cut regulations, “Ohio is showing them how.”

The Buckeye Institute Asks High Court to Protect Free Speech on College Campuses

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear Speech First v. Sands and find that Virginia Tech’s use of a ‘bias response team’ violates students’ First Amendment rights. “Bias response teams have become ubiquitous on college campuses across the country. While ostensibly they exist to promote civility and inclusion, they are in fact a tool to silence debate and enforce conformity of thought.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Job Market Cools Slightly as Summer Ends

The Buckeye Institute commented on the newly released jobs report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “After three straight record-setting months, the Ohio job market cooled slightly in August…Despite this dip, Ohio’s job market remains strong. However, the Buckeye State needs more workers—workers with the skills that meet the needs of Ohio’s employers. As lawmakers return to Columbus for the fall legislative session, they should focus on comprehensive reforms to  modernize Ohio’s economy and Ohio’s workforce.”

The Buckeye Institute Joins NFIB in Calling on SCOTUS to Abandon Chevron

The Buckeye Institute joined the National Federation of Independent Business in filing an amicus brief in Foster v. U.S. Department of Agriculture, calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case and finally overturn Chevron, a “judicially created doctrine that props up an aggressive administrative state” that imposes regulations far beyond what Congress authorized. “The result of Chevron is an impossible-to-navigate ‘regulatory minefield’ that costs small businesses and consumers billions each year.”

Help wanted: More bright minds in Dayton

In the Dayton Daily News, The Buckeye Institute makes the case for a state-based visa program that enables Ohio to attract the workers it desperately needs. “State policymakers can collaborate with federal policymakers to create a system of state-based visas to allow for more high-skilled immigrants who want to work, invent, and invest themselves in Ohio. More people, more creative minds, more motivated inventors — and more stories like the Wright brothers in Dayton.”
