The Buckeye Institute: Senate Budget Offers a Path to Greater Prosperity for Ohio

In a new policy memo, A Path to Greater Prosperity, The Buckeye Institute offers recommendations on Ohio’s budget as it enters the final stages of deliberation in the Ohio Senate. In the memo, Buckeye notes that the Senate version of Ohio’s budget “includes the boldest school choice plan in state history, pro-growth tax reform, additional guardrails to help prevent government overspending, and occupational licensing reform,” all policies supported by The Buckeye Institute.;

The Buckeye Institute Wins Victory for Public Employees Against Government Unions

The Buckeye Institute secured victories for five of its clients in Darling v. AFSCME, with AFSCME and the Ohio Education Association acknowledging that money was illegally taken out of workers’ paychecks and given to government unions. “In returning money that was illegally taken from Buckeye’s clients, the unions acknowledge that public employees have the right to quit government unions whenever they want and that when workers end their union membership, unions must immediately stop seizing workers’ wages.”

The Buckeye Institute: Proposed Federal Rule Justifies Economically Reckless Regulations

The Buckeye Institute filed public comments on the Office of Management and Budget’s proposed changes to how the federal government determines the economic and social impacts of proposed federal regulations, which, if adopted, will make it easier to justify economically reckless regulations. “All in all, [the proposed changes] stack[] the deck in the regulator’s favor, making it easier to justify economically reckless regulations that encroach on freedoms enjoyed by American industries and citizenry.”

The Buckeye Institute Offers Tangible Solutions for Ohio’s High-Skilled Worker Shortage

The Buckeye Institute released a new policy report, Ohio’s Global Fight for Talent: The Case for State-Based Visas for High-Skill Immigrants, which demonstrates how a well-designed state-based visa program for high-skilled, legal immigration would help fill current gaps in the state’s high-skilled job market. This report is a companion piece to Modernizing Ohio’s Policies to Seize New Economic Opportunities. Together, the two reports offer state and federal policymakers a comprehensive road map to ensure Ohio’s workers and economy can succeed in the 21st century.

The Buckeye Institute Testifies Before Congressional Committee

The Buckeye Institute testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, a subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. In his testimony, Andrew M. Grossman, a senior legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute, highlighted the “use and abuse of ‘sue and settle’ tactics in litigation against the government,” which Grossman noted, “seeks to compel [federal] agency action, set agency priorities, and (in some instances) influence the content of regulations or other agency actions.”;

The Buckeye Institute Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Protect Property Owners from Government Extortion

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Sheetz v. County of El Dorado, calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the rights of property owners from the government’s attempt to extort payments from its citizens to build roads in the county in return for granting permits for work wholly unrelated to road improvements. “Courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have ruled that the government cannot use its power to extort payments from citizens in exchange for permits…”

Father’s conviction in daughter’s death shows Columbus doesn’t need more gun laws

In The Columbus Dispatch, The Buckeye Institute urges Columbus to spend its resources educating firearms owners about safe storage and children to avoid guns. “It is tragic when a child dies. It is even more tragic when that death was preventable. But perhaps the worst is when the child dies because of a parent’s negligence. … Columbus does not need additional gun laws to prosecute individuals who recklessly store their firearms around children. Mr. Johnson’s plea agreement and upcoming sentencing are testament to that fact.”;

U.S. Supreme Court Adopts Buckeye Institute Arguments in Protecting Homeowners from Equity Theft

The Buckeye Institute celebrated a victory in Tyler v. Hennepin County after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with arguments made by The Buckeye Institute in its amicus brief and unanimously ruled that a Minnesota law allowing the government to pocket the profits of seized property violated the U.S. Constitution. “The court’s unanimous decision confirmed, once again, that the government cannot seize private property, sell it for a profit, and pocket the money.”

The Buckeye Institute Outlines Path to a Flat Tax

In a new policy memo, How Ohio Can Join the Flat-Tax Revolution, The Buckeye Institute outlines how Ohio can “lower tax rates for everyone” and use revenue triggers “along the way to an across-the-board flat-tax.” In the policy memo, Buckeye experts note that moving Ohio to a 2.75 percent flat tax would “result in a $2.5 billion boost to GDP, thousands of new jobs, and $800 million in increased investment in 2024.”;
