The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Starts 2023 with Good Jobs Report

The Buckeye Institute commented on the newly released jobs report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “The private sector added 12,600 jobs in January. However, most notable are the results of the annual revisions that statisticians undertake each year to ensure accuracy in the job numbers. The revisions show greater private-sector job growth in Ohio, with an additional 36,000 jobs added last year.”

The Buckeye Institute Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Stop Home Equity Theft

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in Tyler v. Hennepin County, urging the court to protect people against governmental equity theft through property seizures. “In drafting the U.S. Constitution, our Founding Fathers embraced a principle that goes back more than 800 years to the Magna Carta, which enshrined into law the concept that the government can take property only when it provides ‘just compensation’ to the owner.”

The Buckeye Institute Files Amicus Brief Urging U.S. Supreme Court to Protect the Principle of Federalism

The Buckeye Institute, along with the Cato Institute, filed an amicus brief in Dakota Finance v. Naturaland Trust, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case and protect the “principles of federalism embodied in the Clean Water Act.” Buckeye and Cato argue that the Fourth Circuit’s decision “fails to honor the principle of federalism upon which our country is built” and urges the court to hear the case.

The Buckeye Institute Reacts to SCOTUS Oral Arguments in Student Loan Cases

The Buckeye Institute issued a statement after the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Biden v. Nebraska and U.S. Department of Education v. Brown that challenge the Biden Administration’s student loan debt cancellation plan. “As The Buckeye Institute argued in its amicus brief and as several justices seemed to recognize, the Constitutional Appropriations clause would require Congress—not the Department of Education—to authorize this program.”

Getting Ohioans Back to Work Means Battling Obesity

“Ohio feels the negative side effects of obesity more acutely than most states. With one-third of its workforce fighting obesity, Ohio ranks 15th in the nation.” In an op-ed published by RealClearPolicy, The Buckeye Institute marks Obesity Care Week by highlighting a forthcoming research paper that “estimates that obesity has sidelined more than 32,000 workers — more than enough to construct and fully staff Intel’s new semiconductor plant in central Ohio. And those missing workers have deprived the state of nearly $20 million in tax revenue.”;

The Buckeye Institute Goes to Court to Protect Constitutional Rights of Gun Owners

The Buckeye Institute filed a lawsuit against the city of Columbus to protect the rights of Ohioans to keep and bear arms after the Columbus City Council passed Ordinance 3176-2022 outlawing certain firearms magazines in violation of Ohio law and the U.S. and Ohio constitutions. Doe v. Columbus was filed in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas, along with a request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Can Create a Responsive Education Bureaucracy to Put #StudentsFirst

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Primary and Secondary Education Committee on the policies in Ohio Senate Bill 1, which reform the State Board of Education and Ohio Department of Education to put students first and better prepare graduates to “earn a living, afford a house, [and] support a family.” “Senate Bill 1 will not solve all the problems facing our public schools, but it can help address them in several ways.”

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Biden v. Nebraska and U.S. Department of Education v. Brown, with the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that the Biden Administration’s student debt cancellation program exceeds the legal authority of the secretary of education to forgive student loan debt without congressional approval, is arbitrary and capricious, and was adopted in a procedurally improper manner. “Before the U.S. Supreme Court is an opportunity to end this illegal program…”

Despite their clear responsibility to produce these public records, Columbus City School officials have refused to comply with Ohio law…”
