“Of icy mountains, good fathers, and worthy goals”

“I am near the bottom of the earth—having made it to Antarctica at long last. The adventure of my lifetime begins as another banner year at Buckeye comes to a close. We have accomplished extraordinary goals together in 2022, and are ready for even more in 2023. I couldn’t be there to celebrate the signing into law of so many tremendous victories in person because I am embarking on a personal dream, inspired by the Sir Ernest Shackleton stories I read in my youth that captured my imagination and never gave it back.”

The NRA vs. the Censorship ‘Mob’

In The Wall Street Journal, Andrew M. Grossman, a senior legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute, and David B. Rivkin Jr., criticize pressure that New York state financial regulators are putting on insurers to “sever business relationships with gun promotion groups.” Grossman and Rivkin write, “It’s the classic threat of B-movie mobsters: Nice business you got there, it’d be a shame if something happened to it. Government shouldn’t operate like that, but it too often does, sometimes to evade the Constitution’s limits on its power.”

The Buckeye Institute Files Suit Against Government Unions for Illegally Taking Wages from Workers’ Paychecks

The Buckeye Institute filed a lawsuit on behalf of ten hardworking Ohio public employees who have had money illegally taken out of their paychecks by their employers and given to a government union. Darling v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) was filed in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. “Ohio law simply does not allow this unethical practice, and we are asking the court to tell the unions and the government to stop illegally taking money from these workers’ paychecks.”

“Ohio’s ‘Regulatory Sandbox’ Deserves Cheers, But More Must Be Done”

On RealClearPolicy, The Buckeye Institute and the Mercatus Center applaud the creation of a “regulatory sandbox” for financial technology in Ohio, writing, “Leaders in Ohio and elsewhere deserve commendation for their ambitious efforts to create a more welcoming system for entrepreneurship. Let’s hope that the new sandbox, and whatever comes next, make it easier for Ohio families to access innovative financial services while also making Ohio more open for business.”;

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio’s November Jobs Report is a Mixed Bag

The Buckeye Institute commented on the newly released jobs report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Ohio’s November jobs report continued to tell two different stories. The monthly household survey was weak, with unemployment remaining at 4.2 percent and the labor force participation rate falling from 61.5. percent to 61.3 percent.” However, “[a]s with October’s report, the payroll survey showed positive signs, with Ohio adding 4,400 private-sector jobs.”

The Buckeye Institute Calls on U.S. Supreme Court to Protect Private Fishermen from Government Overreach

The Buckeye Institute was joined by the National Federation of Independent Business in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which challenges whether the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service can force commercial fishermen not only to host, house, and feed federal government monitors on their vessels but also force the fishermen to pay the government employees’ salaries. “The Buckeye Institute urges the U.S. Supreme Court to take this case and uphold the rights of the fishermen against these unconstitutional intrusions.”
