The Buckeye Institute Takes School Guidance Counselor Case to Ohio Supreme Court

The Buckeye Institute filed its appeal brief with the Ohio Supreme Court in Kolkowski v. Ashtabula Area Teachers Association, urging the court to hear the case and recognize that a union—which Barbara Kolkowski is not a member of—cannot force her to accept union legal representation to arbitrate her workplace grievance. “Today, the Ohio Supreme Court has an opportunity to vindicate Ms. Kolkowski’s right to have her own legal counsel.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Job Market Cools in September

The Buckeye Institute commented on the newly released jobs report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “In September, Ohio’s unemployment rate remained flat at four percent, and the labor force participation rate saw a slight decline to 61.7 percent, indicating that people have left the job market. Although the national labor force participation rate also declined in September, the national unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent, causing Ohio to fall farther behind the national average.”

The Buckeye Institute filed a shiny new lawsuit against the District of Columbia Department of Health challenging the D.C. Council’s and Mayor Muriel Bowser’s unconstitutional emergency acts and orders, which D.C. used to force the closure of The Big Board, a neighborhood bar and grill located in our nation’s capital and owned by Buckeye’s client, Eric Flannery. Flannery v. D.C. Department of Health was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

The Buckeye Institute Wins Yet Another COVID Mandate Case

The Buckeye Institute and its client Eric Flannery celebrated Administrative Law Judge Cory M. Chandler’s ruling in favor of Mr. Flannery in D.C. Department of Health v. The Big Board. The D.C. Department of Health had unlawfully attempted to impose further fines on Mr. Flannery after his refusal to enforce D.C. government’s pandemic-era mandates. The judge ruled that “Mr. Flannery owes zero dollars in fines, which is exactly the right amount.”

In Crain’s Cleveland Business, The Buckeye Institute outlines how Ohio can better prepare students for the 21st century economy. Logan Kolas, an economic policy analyst with The Buckeye Institute’s Economic Research Center, writes, “Taking bold preemptive action now to help our schools hire the teachers they need to teach will help our businesses hire employees with the knowledge and skills they need to do the job. Computer science in school today really will determine the Ohio we have tomorrow.”
