The Buckeye Institute: New Jobs Report Shows Concerning Signs for Ohio’s Economic Recovery

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Ohio’s April jobs report was mixed with one survey showing the labor market continuing its recovery and the other survey showing the recovery stalling. This mixed bag indicates that the state’s economic recovery continues to be uneven and matches the recent disappointing national jobs report.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio’s Burdensome Cosmetology Requirements Need to be Trimmed

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Small Business and Economic Opportunity Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 133, which will reduce the hours of education required to obtain a cosmetology license. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, recognized that Ohio needs to do much more work to eliminate or reduce unnecessary occupational license restrictions, but that Senate Bill 133 will “remove at least some of the occupational licensing obstacles faced by Ohio’s working men and women.”

In The Columbus Dispatch, The Buckeye Institute urges Ohio policymakers to reform Ohio’s broken cash bail system, which “allows cash bail to serve as an illegitimate proxy for public safety, allowing dangerous defendants to pay cash to offset their threat to public safety.” Andrew J. Geisler, a legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute, writes, “Policymakers can codify the Supreme Court’s presumption of release rule and take additional steps to ensure that state courts treat all defendants fairly in the pretrial decision.”

Ohio Governor Signs Buckeye Institute-Championed Policy to Allow Pharmacists to Help in the Fight Against COVID-19
