The Buckeye Institute: High-Speed Broadband is an Essential of Daily Life in 21st Century

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Financial Institutions and Technology Committee on the policies in House Bill 2, which would expand access to broadband internet service to underserved areas of Ohio. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at Buckeye, highlighted that “access to high-speed broadband is an essential of daily life” with “telehealth, online learning, internet commerce, and telework all depend[ing] on consumer access to reliable broadband service.”

New Buckeye Institute Brief Demonstrates Benefits of Telehealth and Other Reforms

The Buckeye Institute released Improving Ohio Health Care with Freedom, which demonstrates the benefits of expanding access to telehealth and lifting unnecessary licensing restrictions on medical professionals. In making these modest reforms, policymakers can make health care more accessible, particularly for elderly Ohioans and those in living in rural areas.

In a piece in The Lima News, The Buckeye Institute marks the one year anniversary of the pandemic and highlights what has been accomplished and what policymakers still need to do to ensure Ohio fully recovers from the pandemic’s impacts. In the piece, Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center and vice president of policy at The Buckeye Institute, writes, “One year later, as Ohio continues to recover from the pandemic’s health, civic, and economic effects, it is worth applauding what has been achieved — and encouraging what more can be accomplished.”

Franc, senior fellow at The Buckeye Institute, writing, “There are no free lunches. Federal dollars come laced with strings. Some axioms just keep proving themselves true. As the ink dries on the latest $2 trillion tranche of federal pandemic relief — the American Rescue Plan — states are learning that the roughly $350 billion of ‘free’ federal aid comes with strings attached. The Buckeye Institute released its 2021 Piglet Book, which identified more than $600 million in savings and looked at spending principles and priorities as Ohio recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. An analysis of Ohio’s proposed biennial budget, the Piglet Book offers savings for lawmakers to consider as they debate the state’s two-year budget. In this year’s report, Buckeye looked at three main areas: how to prudently spend during an economic recovery, how to reduce government spending, and how to empower families.

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Continues Slow Recovery from Pandemic Job Loss

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “As Ohio and the country mark the one year anniversary of the pandemic, Ohio’s labor market continues its slow recovery, with the unemployment rate falling to 5.3 percent, the labor force participation rate increasing to 62.3 percent, and the private-sector adding 22,800 new jobs.”
