The Buckeye Institute Files Two New Tax Lawsuits Against Columbus and Cincinnati

The Buckeye Institute filed two new lawsuits on behalf of two more Ohioans—Eric Denison of Westerville and Josh Schaad of Blue Ash—which call for the courts to declare unconstitutional an Ohio law that allows the cities of Columbus and Cincinnati to tax the income of workers who do not live in, and have not been working within, the respective municipalities. The Buckeye Institute previously filed another similar case, Buckeye v. Kilgore, in July 2020.;

The Buckeye Institute: Time to Decouple Ohio’s Unfair Utility Deal

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 10, which would repeal House Bill 6’s egregious decoupling provisions. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson noted that Ohio’s energy policy has made “energy more expensive than it needs to be for Ohio families and businesses,” and said that “Ohio needs a comprehensive energy-market restructuring to fully undo the damage that House Bill 6 and other misguided energy policies have caused.”

The Buckeye Institute: Expand Access to Broadband to Help Ohio Schools and Families

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 8, which would expand access to broadband internet service to underserved areas of Ohio. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson, urged lawmakers to adopt a “limited, targeted grant program that supports private-sector broadband expansion, which The Buckeye Institute outlined in Policy Solutions for the Pandemic: Expanding Broadband to Underserved Areas.

The Buckeye Institute’s Robert Alt Reacts to Governor DeWine’s Budget Proposal

Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, issued a statement reacting to Governor Mike DeWine’s proposed budget, which represents the majority of Ohio’s overall state spending as outlined in The Buckeye Institute’s recent policy brief. In his statement Alt said, “While many of the governor’s policies—particularly the workforce and broadband proposals—can help move Ohio forward, this budget proposal missed an opportunity to undertake bold reforms on taxes, spending, education, and regulations.”

The Buckeye Institute Files First Amendment Case on Behalf of Ohio Guidance Counselor

The Buckeye Institute filed a complaint on behalf of Barbara Kolkowski, who objects to being forced to accept union representation and decisions made by union arbitrators in a contract dispute particularly given that she is not a member of the union. “Even though Ms. Kolkowski is not a member of the union, she is being forced to have a union representative speak for her. This unlawful arrangement contravenes the well-established First Amendment rights of public-sector employees and plainly violates Ohio statute.”

The Buckeye Institute: “Shadow Budget” Accounts for More Than Half of Ohio’s $153 Billion Budget

The Buckeye Institute released a new policy brief, Beware the Shadow Budget: Ohio Spends More than Many Think, which reveals a full picture of state government spending and is critical to understand as Ohio begins to debate its next biennial budget. In the paper, Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, pointed out that Ohio’s total expenditures will cost taxpayers more than $153 billion—more than twice the $69 billion dollar figure often cited as “Ohio’s budget.” ;

The Buckeye Institute Appeals Thompson v. MEA to United States Supreme Court

The Buckeye Institute filed its petition for certiorari in Thompson v. Marietta Education Association with the United States Supreme Court. Buckeye’s petition calls on the Court to hear this important First Amendment case and end laws forcing public-sector employees to accept a union’s unwanted representation. The case was initially filed on June 27, 2018, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.;

The Buckeye Institute: Worrying Signs in Ohio Jobs Report

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “The decline in Ohio’s unemployment rate—which was due to fewer Ohioans looking for work and instead leaving the labor force—does not mask the weakness in the December jobs report.”

In The Lima News, The Buckeye Institute’s Logan Kolas looks at how Ohio can build on a relatively successful economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the upcoming budget, writing, “Ohio has a chance to build on a relatively successful economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gov. Mike DeWine’s executive budget should take it. As he sets spending priorities for the next two years, DeWine should limit proposed spending increases, cut unnecessary spending, and strategically use the state’s rainy day fund to keep Ohio on a prosperous, sustainable fiscal path.”
