Buckeye President and CEO Robert Alt Authors Paper Surveying State-Level Criminal Law Changes

In a new whitepaper for The Federalist Society, Robert Alt, a nationally-recognized scholar in criminal law and president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, reviewed the legal landscape of criminal law changes across the country writing that states were most willing to adjust their laws related to criminal sentencing, record expungement and offender registries, marijuana legalization, and restoring voting rights for people convicted of felonies.

The Buckeye Institute Joins National Coalition in Filing Third Amicus Brief to Help All School Safely Re-Open

The Buckeye Institute joined a coalition of nationally recognized policy and education groups in filing an amicus brief in the third case challenging the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance to distribute CARES Act funding in a fair and equitable manner that will help all schools safely reopen. This newest brief was filed in NAACP v. DeVos with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia on August 24, 2020.

The Buckeye Institute: July Jobs Report Shows Ohio Recovery Slowing

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Ohio’s July jobs report indicates that the rapid recovery from the depths of the pandemic recession has slowed compared to May and June, when Ohio recovered half of its job losses and the state reopened businesses getting people back to work.”

The Buckeye Institute: CARES Act Money Should Help All Students Return to the Classroom

The Buckeye Institute joined a coalition of 38 nationally recognized policy and education groups in filing an amicus brief in Michigan v. DeVos. The brief called on the court to allow money from the CARES Act to be distributed fairly and equitably to serve all students and help all schools safely reopen. The brief was filed with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

The Buckeye Institute: Repealing Ohio’s CAT Will Enhance Economic Freedom and Opportunity

The Buckeye Institute released new research by its Economic Research Center that looked at the impact eliminating Ohio’s commercial activities tax (CAT) would have on Ohio’s businesses and its rankings in national economic indexes. In Letting the CAT Out of the Bag: How to Improve Ohio’s Economy and National Rankings, Buckeye researchers found that by repealing the CAT, Ohio would move up 42 spots to first place in the Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index—making Ohio more attractive to relocating businesses.

The Buckeye Institute issued the following statement calling for the repeal of House Bill 6. “Ohio House Bill 6 was an ugly corporate bailout from the beginning, and it hasn’t gotten any prettier. The Buckeye Institute calls upon policymakers to rectify the previous error and take decisive action to move the state forward and far away from subsidizing crony companies while sticking ordinary Ohioans with higher energy bills.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio’s Job Market Halfway to Recovery

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Although unemployment is still high, the June jobs report shows that Ohio’s economy continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic. Ohio added 195,000 private sector jobs in June and the jobless rate fell from a high of 17.6 percent in April to 10.9 percent in June—almost half of the pandemic induced spike.”;
