Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, issued the following statement on the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Gresham v. Azar that overturned Medicaid work and community engagement requirements.
Three Kent State University custodians have now become able to resign from their government union as part of a settlement in Hannay v. Board of Trustees of Kent State University. As part of the settlement that The Buckeye Institute and the Liberty Justice Center attorneys secured for their clients, the three custodians’ resignations from the union are now being honored and they will no longer be forced to pay money to AFSCME Council 8 as a condition of employment at Kent State University. In exchange, they agreed to withdraw their lawsuit against the union and University.
Andrew J. Kidd, Ph.D., economist with The Buckeye Institute’s Economic Research Center, testified Wednesday before the Ohio Senate General Government and Agency Review Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 246. Those policies would make it easier for people with licenses in other states to live out their dreams in Ohio and would fuel the economic growth the state desperately needs.
Twenty-two nationally-renowned public policy organizations filed amicus briefs with the United States Supreme Court in support of Buckeye’s case Reisman v. AFUM, which calls for an immediate end to laws that force public-sector employees to accept a union’s exclusive representation. The Cato Institute, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Fairness Center, Freedom Foundation, Goldwater Institute, Liberty Justice Center, National Association of Scholars, National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, Pacific Legal Foundation, and a coalition of 13 policy organizations all filed briefs in support of Professor Reisman.
On Monday, The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court of the United States in Jarchow v. State Bar of Wisconsin, which calls on the court to recognize the First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and freedom of association by ending laws that force lawyers to join state-sponsored bar associations that engage in lobbying on inherently political and ideological issues in order to practice their profession.
A lawsuit appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court is challenging the doctrine of exclusive representation that gives teachers unions the sole right to negotiate teachers’ salaries with school districts, even the salaries of non-members. Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, issued the following statement after the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate voted to delay the application period for the EdChoice program by 60 days, saying, “While some very reasonable alternatives are being explored to improve school choice in Ohio, it is unfortunate that families who need predictability in order to make the best decisions for their children don't have that at present.”
The Buckeye Institute, along with the Cato Institute and prominent health scholar Michael F. Cannon, filed an amicus brief on Tuesday with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Association for Community Health Plans v. the United States Department of Treasury. In its brief, Buckeye calls on the D.C. Court of Appeals to uphold the restoration of flexibility, security, and consumer choice in the health insurance marketplace.
Andrew J. Kidd testified that the significance of the policies in House Bill 255 are that they “shine a light on the true costs of local tax expenditures and contribute to Ohio’s ongoing conversation about how to make our state and local tax codes fairer, and our residents more prosperous.”
The Buckeye Institute’s tireless efforts to increase job opportunities for Ohio’s military families culminated in the passage of Senate Bill 7, which Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed into law at a ceremony at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Monday afternoon. Buckeye’s president and CEO Robert Alt joined Governor DeWine, legislative leaders, and military families on stage at the bill signing.
