The Buckeye Institute Outlines How Lawmakers Can Use Ohio’s Capital Budget to Increase Classroom Space

In a new policy memo, A Transformational Investment: Use Ohio’s Capital Budget to Increase Classroom Space, The Buckeye Institute urges Ohio lawmakers to “create a permanent revolving loan fund to increase student capacity at schools across Ohio—a vital need given the Ohio EdChoice program’s success and recent expansion.” Using the One-Time Strategic Community Investments Fund to “improve the state’s education infrastructure” will make “transformational investments in education.”

The Buckeye Institute: Open Ohio’s Regulatory Sandbox to All Innovators

The Buckeye Institute released a new policy brief, A Sandbox for Everything: A Universal Approach to Help Innovators, urging Ohio lawmakers to cut more regulatory red tape and “expand Ohio’s ‘regulatory sandbox’ to include all industries.” The brief outlines three improvements Ohio policymakers can take to cut more regulations and attract more innovators to the Buckeye State. “By expanding its regulatory sandbox and leading the way in creating a state-to-federal sandbox reciprocity program, Ohio will remain competitive in the innovation race.”

The Buckeye Institute Releases Economic Freedom of North America 2023 Report

In 2023 Ohio moved up two spots in the Economic Freedom of North America 2023 report, ranking 33rd out of all 50 states. The report, released by the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute in partnership with Canada’s Fraser Institute, ranks every state and province in North America based on economic freedom, measured by government spending, taxation, and labor-market freedom.

Highway to the Danger Zone? PILOT Program Set to Shortchange Taxpayers

Responding to The Buckeye Institute’s economic concerns regarding low statutory limits placed on a “green energy” PILOT program, Open Road Renewables has asserted that Frasier Solar’s PILOT is a “clear winner” for Knox County. To address these concerns, Buckeye modeled additional scenarios. Doing so only further supports the original conclusion that the PILOT program is not a “clear winner” for Knox County and that its commissioners should be mindful of the program’s short- and long-term tradeoffs.

New Buckeye Institute Economic Modeling Reveals Tax Cuts Would Grow Kansas Economy

A new report, Reforming Kansas Tax Policy, released Monday by the Economic Research Center (ERC) at The Buckeye Institute, found that cutting taxes in Kansas could lead to hundreds of millions in economic growth and business investment. The ERC partnered with Kansas Policy Institute to conduct the research. “With regional competition for businesses and workers, Kansas must revisit pro-growth tax reforms to keep the state economically competitive.”

The Buckeye Institute Recommends Greater Property Tax Transparency

In a new policy memo, Property Tax Transparency: What Are We Paying For, The Buckeye Institute recommends that Ohio follow the example of Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano and adopt an easy-to-use online database that shows all tax levies that apply to individual parcels of property, such as Franklin County’s Levy Estimator. This tool “helps citizens better understand what their local governments cost, so they can make better, more informed decisions the next time a levy appears on the ballot.”

The Buckeye Institute Identifies 47 Occupational Licenses Ohio Can Eliminate or Reform

As the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee begins its review of Ohio occupational licenses, The Buckeye Institute issued its third Opening Doors policy brief, where it identified 47 licenses that the state should eliminate or reform—27 license or certification requirements that lawmakers can eliminate and another 20 requirements that lawmakers can modify—to make Ohio more economically competitive and make it easier for people to earn a living.
