The Buckeye Institute: States Should Follow Ohio’s Lead on Spending Remaining ARPA Dollars

In a new policy memo, Responsibly Spending Remaining ARPA Dollars, The Buckeye Institute outlined how states can “follow Ohio’s lead” on how to wisely spend their remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) tax dollars. The Buckeye Institute noted that as state legislatures debate how to spend remaining ARPA dollars, they should adhere to “sound spending principles that will keep…state[s] solvent without risking future tax hikes or painful spending cuts.”

The Buckeye Institute’s World Famous Piglet Book Identifies More Than $2.7 Billion in Savings for Ohio Taxpayers

The Buckeye Institute released its now world-famous 2023 Piglet Book, which analyzed Ohio’s proposed biennial budget and identified more than $2.7 billion in savings for Ohio taxpayers. “By implementing pro-growth tax policies, prioritizing necessary spending, closing tax loopholes, ending corporate welfare and government ‘philanthropy,’ and continuing the effort to fund students first, lawmakers can spur economic growth and prosperity for all Ohioans.”

“The Buckeye Institute Calls for School Choice for Every Child, Every Family, Every Community”

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Finance Committee on the K-12 education policies included in Ohio’s proposed budget, House Bill 33, and called for lawmakers to make school choice available to every child, in every family, in every community of Ohio. Buckeye applauded Governor DeWine and the General Assembly for their bold education proposals that give families options and put students first and encouraged lawmakers to adopt policies that would do more for students and families.

“New Buckeye Institute Research: More Than 32,000 Ohioans Working if Obesity Were Eliminated”

The Buckeye Institute released Obesity’s Impact on Ohio’s Workforce, which looked at the economic impact of obesity and found that more than 32,000 Ohioans would be working if obesity were eliminated. Those newly employed Ohioans would generate nearly $20 million in additional revenues for the state. “A healthy, productive workforce is key to sustaining a strong economy. But Ohio, like much of the country, suffers from an obesity problem that keeps thousands of workers out of the workforce.”

Buckeye Institute-Championed Policies Can Make Ohio the Silicon Heartland

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Technology and Innovation Committee on Buckeye-championed free-market policies that would help Ohio transition from its “‘Rust Belt’ roots into a technological, 21st century Silicon Heartland.” Buckeye, outlined several policy solutions to help Ohio regain its “economic footing and achieve long-term economic success.” The recommendations focused on five key policy areas: worker training and education, regulatory “sandboxes,” drone technology, data protection, and state-based immigration.

“The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Needs Responsible, Comprehensive Tax Reform”

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Ways and Means Committee on the policies in House Bill 1, which would replace Ohio’s current income tax with a 2.75 percent flat tax and put Ohio on the road to comprehensive and responsible tax reform. The Buckeye Institute applauded lawmakers for “a strong effort to improve Ohio’s overall tax climate by reducing and flattening the state income tax,” calling it a “significant improvement and laudable accomplishment.”

The Buckeye Institute Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Uphold More Than 100 Years of Precedents and Protect Taxpayers

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Moore v. United States, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case and reverse a ruling out of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that would expand congressional authority to levy taxes well beyond what the Constitution and court precedent allow. “The Ninth Circuit’s fallacious ruling effectively does away with more than a century of Supreme  Court precedent, and, if allowed to stand, would vastly expand congressional taxing authority.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Job Market Nearly Recovered to Pre-Pandemic Peak

The Buckeye Institute commented on the newly released jobs report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “February 2023 marks three years after the start of the pandemic, and Ohio now has 4,805,900 private-sector jobs—11,000 jobs shy of the state’s pre-pandemic peak. Ohio’s job market added 2,300 private-sector jobs in February, continuing a trend that should see the state surpass its pre-pandemic job total this year.”

The Buckeye Institute: Expanding School Choice Puts #StudentsFirst

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Finance Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education on the policies included in Ohio’s proposed budget, House Bill 33, that expand school choice and put students first. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, noted that the policies in Ohio House Bill 33 “will help families that desperately need additional educational choices and resources” but recommended that the General Assembly be bolder and “put students first.”

The Buckeye Institute Urges Court to Overturn New York’s Unconstitutional Gun Law

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Christian v. Nigrelli with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on behalf of Project 21, a national network of black political, civic, and business leaders. In its brief, The Buckeye Institute argues that New York’s Conceal Carry Improvement Act violates the right of the citizens of New York, particularly black New Yorkers, to keep and bear arms, which the U.S. Constitution guarantees.
