The Buckeye Institute-Championed School Board Reform Passes Ohio Senate

The Buckeye Institute issued a statement on the Ohio Senate passing Senate Bill 178, which now goes to the Ohio House for consideration. “The passage of Senate Bill 178 represents an opportunity for Ohio to take a bold step to improve K-12 education. … By reforming the State Board of Education and the Ohio Department of Education, Senate Bill 178 will better align education with the needs of employers and help overcome historic learning loss in the wake of the pandemic.”

Renowned D.C. Lawyer Andrew M. Grossman Named Senior Legal Fellow at The Buckeye Institute

The Buckeye Institute announced that Andrew M. Grossman, a nationally-recognized attorney and constitutional scholar, has been named a senior legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute. Grossman is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of BakerHostetler LLP, where he serves as the appellate and major motions team co-leader. “Andrew Grossman adds an extraordinarily strategic perspective and tremendous capacity to our growing Legal Center. “Public education ‘underperforming, underdelivering.’ State board reform overdue”

In The Columbus Dispatch, The Buckeye Institute urges reform of the State School Board and the Ohio Department of Education, writing, “Ohio education reform, if it has any chance of success, must start at the top. That means overhauling the ineffective State Board of Education that haplessly oversees the bureaucratic State Department of Education. Legislation pending in the General Assembly seems poised to take several commonsense steps in the right direction. And it’s about time.”

Buckeye Institute-Championed Reforms Would Fix Ohio’s Broken Education Bureaucracy

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Primary and Secondary Education Committee on the policies in Ohio Senate Bill 178, which reform the State Board of Education and Ohio Department of Education to better prepare high school graduates to “earn a living, afford a house, [and] support a family.” Ohio’s employers have “long complained that Ohio’s education system does not sufficiently prepare high school graduates for the workforce,” and Senate Bill 178 pursues needed reforms.

The Buckeye Institute Leads Coalition Urging Ohio Lawmakers to Adopt Universal Occupational License Recognition

The Buckeye Institute, Americans for Prosperity-Ohio, Americans for Tax Reform, Goldwater Institute, and National Taxpayers Union sent an open letter to members of the Ohio General Assembly urging the quick adoption of universal occupational licensing recognition. These leading voices on universal occupational licensing recognition together urged lawmakers to “pursue and enact licensing rules like universal licensing recognition that make it easier—not harder—for employers and license holders to call Ohio home.”

The Buckeye Institute Files Lawsuit Challenging IRS Collection of Donor Data

The Buckeye Institute filed a lawsuit challenging a decades-old tax law that forces the IRS to demand that nonprofit charities hand over the private information of their largest donors every year. Represented by attorneys at the Institute for Free Speech and its own attorneys, Buckeye’s lawsuit says the law violates the First Amendment and the requirement chills free speech and association. The case is The Buckeye Institute v. Internal Revenue Service and was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, Columbus Division.

The Buckeye Institute Files Suit Against Biden Administration Over Illegal Student Loan Debt Cancellation

The Buckeye Institute filed a brand new lawsuit with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Eastern Division challenging the Biden Administration’s proposed and illegal student loan debt cancellation. The Buckeye Institute, representing plaintiff Amanda Latta, filed Latta v. U.S. Department of Education, calling on the court to determine whether the U.S. secretary of education has the authority to forgive student loan debt without congressional approval.

The Buckeye Institute: Reducing Occupational Licenses Would Make It Easier to Work in Ohio

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee on the recommendations in House Bill 509, which would help make Ohio more economically competitive by eliminating and modernizing the state’s burdensome occupational licensing requirements. Buckeye urged lawmakers to not only implement the recommendations in House Bill 509, but to adopt universal occupational license recognition to make Ohio more competitive economically and ensure that trained, licensed professionals from other states can pursue their careers in the Buckeye State.
