The Buckeye Institute released a new policy brief, Fund Students First: Now is the Right Time for Education Savings Accounts, which outlines the benefits of empowering families—not just school districts—to educate their children. In the brief, author Greg R. The Buckeye Institute: Allow Pharmacists to Help Care for Ohioans

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee on the policies in House Bill 6, which would allow pharmacists to test for COVID-19 and administer COVID-19 vaccines—a recommendation that Buckeye made in the early days of the pandemic. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson urged lawmakers to remove “obstructive regulatory red-tape” to help fight the pandemic, which is “essential for Ohio’s long-term success.”

The Buckeye Institute: Expanding Broadband is Vital for Ohio’s Future

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Finance Committee on the policies in House Bill 2, which would expand access to broadband internet service to underserved areas of Ohio. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson, told lawmakers that with many areas across Ohio lacking access to broadband the “economic gap between those communities with broadband access and those without will likely continue to widen,” and that “[w]ithout adequate plans to deliver broadband service throughout the state, Ohio risks leaving many communities and families behind…"

The Buckeye Institute: Reducing Red Tape Will Help Ohio’s Economy

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 9, which would “cut through unnecessary restrictions and red tape that strangle Ohio’s economy, entrepreneurs, and workforce.” In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson applauded the Senate for “continuing regulatory reform and cutting bureaucratic red tape,” and urged lawmakers to “eliminate many of the unnecessary regulations that strangle our businesses and keep our citizens from working.”

The Buckeye Institute: Policies in Senate Bills 3 & 6 Welcome Medical Professionals to Come Make a Living in Ohio

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Health Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 3 and Senate Bill 6, which would make it easier for licensed medical professionals to come make a living in Ohio. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson noted that while the policies in Senate Bill 3 and Senate Bill 6 can “make Ohio a more attractive place to live and work,” “[u]niversal recognition of occupational licenses remains the ideal” policy.

The Buckeye Institute Files Two New Tax Lawsuits Against Columbus and Cincinnati

The Buckeye Institute filed two new lawsuits on behalf of two more Ohioans—Eric Denison of Westerville and Josh Schaad of Blue Ash—which call for the courts to declare unconstitutional an Ohio law that allows the cities of Columbus and Cincinnati to tax the income of workers who do not live in, and have not been working within, the respective municipalities. The Buckeye Institute previously filed another similar case, Buckeye v. Kilgore, in July 2020.;

The Buckeye Institute: Time to Decouple Ohio’s Unfair Utility Deal

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 10, which would repeal House Bill 6’s egregious decoupling provisions. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson noted that Ohio’s energy policy has made “energy more expensive than it needs to be for Ohio families and businesses,” and said that “Ohio needs a comprehensive energy-market restructuring to fully undo the damage that House Bill 6 and other misguided energy policies have caused.”

Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, issued a statement reacting to Governor Mike DeWine’s proposed budget, which represents the majority of Ohio’s overall state spending as outlined in The Buckeye Institute’s recent policy brief. In his statement Alt said, “While many of the governor’s policies—particularly the workforce and broadband proposals—can help move Ohio forward, this budget proposal missed an opportunity to undertake bold reforms on taxes, spending, education, and regulations.”

The Buckeye Institute Files First Amendment Case on Behalf of Ohio Guidance Counselor

The Buckeye Institute filed a complaint on behalf of Barbara Kolkowski, who objects to being forced to accept union representation and decisions made by union arbitrators in a contract dispute particularly given that she is not a member of the union. “Even though Ms. Kolkowski is not a member of the union, she is being forced to have a union representative speak for her. This unlawful arrangement contravenes the well-established First Amendment rights of public-sector employees and plainly violates Ohio statute.”
