The Buckeye Institute: “Shadow Budget” Accounts for More Than Half of Ohio’s $153 Billion Budget

The Buckeye Institute released a new policy brief, Beware the Shadow Budget: Ohio Spends More than Many Think, which reveals a full picture of state government spending and is critical to understand as Ohio begins to debate its next biennial budget. In the paper, Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, pointed out that Ohio’s total expenditures will cost taxpayers more than $153 billion—more than twice the $69 billion dollar figure often cited as “Ohio’s budget.” ;

The Buckeye Institute Appeals Thompson v. MEA to United States Supreme Court

The Buckeye Institute filed its petition for certiorari in Thompson v. Marietta Education Association with the United States Supreme Court. Buckeye’s petition calls on the Court to hear this important First Amendment case and end laws forcing public-sector employees to accept a union’s unwanted representation. The case was initially filed on June 27, 2018, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.;

The Buckeye Institute: Worrying Signs in Ohio Jobs Report

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “The decline in Ohio’s unemployment rate—which was due to fewer Ohioans looking for work and instead leaving the labor force—does not mask the weakness in the December jobs report.”

The Buckeye Institute Urges U.S. Supreme Court to Overturn PruneYard and Protect Property Rights

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court of the United States in Cedar Point Nursery v. Hassid arguing that the court should overturn PruneYard v. Robins, and protect the rights of property owners against trespassers. In filing the brief, Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, said, “It is far past time for the U.S. Supreme Court to dispense with the anomaly that is PruneYard, and to properly protect private property rights as the Constitution requires.”

The Buckeye Institute Releases Economic Freedom of North America 2020

Ohio ranks an unimpressive 35th out of all 50 states in this year’s Economic Freedom of North America report, released by the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute in partnership with Canada’s Fraser Institute. The report ranks every state and province in North America based on economic freedom, as measured by government spending, taxation, and labor market restrictions.

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio House Should Adopt Senate’s Occupational License Reform Policy

Greg R. Lawson, a research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, issued a statement praising the Ohio Senate for eliminating the requirement for a number of occupational licenses and reducing the training requirements for others. Lawson urged the Ohio House to concur with the Senate’s proposal, saying, “While  more can be done to eliminate employment barriers…the policies in House Bill 442 are a small, but important step in the right direction to end Ohio’s permission-slip policies.”

In Brief to U.S. Supreme Court The Buckeye Institute Supports New Hampshire’s Fight Against Taxation Without Representation

The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in New Hampshire v. Massachusetts calling on the court to protect Granite Staters from unconstitutional taxation by its neighbor—Massachusetts. This unconstitutional taxation is one Buckeye has challenged in Buckeye v. Kilgore, where an Ohio law allowed municipalities to tax income from workers who do not live in, and were prohibited from working within, the city’s jurisdiction during Ohio’s stay-at-home order.

The Buckeye Institute: November Jobs Report is a Mixed Bag

Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center at The Buckeye Institute and vice president of policy, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “Although Ohio’s unemployment rate continued to fall in November—down from 6.1 percent in October to 5.7 percent—a driving force behind the drop was many Ohioans stopped looking for work.”

Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, issued the following statement is support of Ohio Senate Bill 3, saying, “The Buckeye Institute as well as conservatives across the state and country strongly urge Governor DeWine to join the cause of fiscal responsibility and to support this important bill and what it does to redeem the 6,238 families who have lost loved ones to overdose deaths since 2019 alone.”
