The Buckeye Institute: Policymakers Need to Make it Easier for Ohioans to Get Out of Debt

Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, submitted testimony to the Ohio Senate Insurance and Financial Institutions Committee on the policies in Senate Bill 112, which clarifies restrictions on debt settlement companies that could make it more difficult for Ohioans to get out of debt. In his testimony, Lawson noted that “Senate Bill 112 helps clarify Ohio’s rules…and can bring some needed relief to debt settlement companies and the constituents that may need them.”

The Buckeye Institute: Objections to Commonsense Drug Sentencing Reforms are Overblown

Daniel J. Dew, legal fellow with The Buckeye Institute’s Legal Center, testified Tuesday before the Ohio House Criminal Justice Subcommittee on Criminal Sentencing on policies that will increase public safety and reduce the state’s prison population. In his testimony, Dew noted the strides Ohio has made to reform its criminal justice system and he discussed the need for Ohio to reform its drug sentencing laws and outlined how expanding access to “earned credit” would enhance public safety.

The Buckeye Institute: Renewing Driver’s Licenses Every Eight Years Will Save Ohioans Time and Money

Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Transportation and Public Safety Committee on the policies in House Bill 372, which would save taxpayers time and money by renewing driver’s license and identification cards every eight years rather than every four. In his testimony, Lawson noted that the reprieve on renewing licenses and ID cards, Lawson wrote, “will shorten lines and decrease wait time for tens of thousands of Ohioans,” and “lifts a small, but meaningful government burden, and helps give real time and money back to Ohio workers.”

The Buckeye Institute Urges IRS to Stop Collecting Donors’ Private Information

On Monday, The Buckeye Institute filed public comments with the IRS in support of a proposed rule change that would no longer require 501(C)(4) organizations to disclose donor lists to the government. In his comments, Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, noted the chilling effect donor disclosure can have on the freedom of association and wrote of Buckeye’s firsthand experience when the Institute received an audit notice from the IRS shortly after the Ohio General Assembly relied upon Buckeye’s arguments in rejecting Medicaid expansion in 2013.

“As Lawmakers Review Ohio’s Occupational Licenses, The Buckeye Institute Identifies 30 Licenses Ohio Can Eliminate or Reform”

As the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee prepares to issue its first review of Ohio occupational licenses, The Buckeye Institute issued its newest policy brief, Opening Doors: Occupational Licensing Reform in Ohio After Senate Bill 255, where it identified 30 licenses that the state can eliminate or where training hours can be reduced, saving Ohioans hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, and countless hours in training.

The Buckeye Institute Co-Hosts Forum on the State of Criminal Justice Reform in Ohio and Nationwide

On November 6, The Buckeye Institute, along with the Drug Enforcement and Policy Center at The Ohio State University, and the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission hosted a forum to examine the past and future outlook of criminal justice reforms in the state of Ohio and explore the state of criminal justice reform at the national level. ;

The Buckeye Institute: Policymakers Should Embrace Efforts to Stretch Local Tax Dollars

Greg R. Lawson, research fellow at The Buckeye Institute, testified on Wednesday before the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee on the policies in House Bill 264, which would focus taxpayer dollars on Ohio’s critical infrastructure needs. Lawson urged policymakers to “embrace any effort to stretch local tax dollars and reduce fiscal burdens on taxpayers and local governments whenever possible.”

The Buckeye Institute: October’s Jobs Report Continues to Signal Concern for Ohio’s Job Market

Andrew J. Kidd, Ph.D., an economist with The Buckeye Institute’s Economic Research Center, commented on newly released employment data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, saying, “With recent reports that Ohio’s economy could fall into a recession by the spring of 2020, it will be important to watch job creation over the next several months to determine if October’s job losses are a blip or the start of a decline.”

“The Buckeye Institute: Policies in House Bill 263 Would Help Ohioans Get Out of Prison’s Revolving Door, and into Jobs”

Daniel J. Dew, legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute’s Legal Center, testified Wednesday before the Ohio House Commerce and Labor Committee on the policies in House Bill 263, which reduce needless occupational licensing restrictions that make it harder for ex-offenders to find jobs after they are released from prison. In his testimony, Dew said that narrowly tailored restrictions “would help Ohio grant more licenses to worthy applicants while protecting public safety.”
