As Ohio policymakers turn their focus to the state’s 2020-2021 biennial budget, The Buckeye Institute’s Economic Research Center released Sustaining Economic Growth: Tax and Budget Principles for Ohio, which found that returning $210 million in surplus to taxpayers—through permanent lower taxes—would lead to 2,100 more jobs annually. “If Ohio is to sustain its recent economic success and prosperity, state policymakers must follow prudent tax and spending principles as they prepare the state’s budget.”

Today, the Ohio Senate, led by President Larry Obhof, announced its priorities for the 2019 legislative session. The Buckeye Institute’s Daniel J. Dew has been named to the Ohio Supreme Court’s Task Force to Examine the Ohio Bail System, which held its first meeting Wednesday. Over the next few months, the task force will bring together judges, prosecutors, law enforcement, defense lawyers, and criminal justice experts to suggest changes to improve Ohio’s bail system. “I am honored to have been asked by Chief Justice O’Connor to serve on this task force and look forward to working with the other members to fix Ohio’s broken bail system.”

After filing the first post-Janus First Amendment labor law challenge in the United States Supreme Court, The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in support of a related challenge, Bierman v. Dayton. Buckeye’s brief calls on the court to recognize that laws forcing recipients of government benefits to speak through unions are unconstitutional. It argues that the lower courts have improperly exempted such “exclusive representation” schemes from scrutiny under the First Amendment.

Twenty-one nationally renowned public policy organizations filed amicus briefs with the United States Supreme Court in support of The Buckeye Institute’s case Uradnik v. IFO, which calls for an immediate end to laws that force public-sector employees to accept a union’s exclusive representation. “Kathy Uradnik has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to protect her First Amendment rights and declare that the laws forcing her to accept representation by a union that has advocated and acted against her interests time and again are unconstitutional.”
