The Buckeye Institute: Senate Bill 122 Sets Consistent Statewide Conditions for Bail

The Buckeye Institute testified on the policies in Ohio Senate Bill 122, which will set consistent statewide conditions for defendants being released on bail while they await trial—just as voters authorized when they overwhelmingly passed Issue 1 in 2022. The bill will make “Ohio’s pre-trial procedures more consistent with the Fourteenth Amendment’s due process protections and the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of the right to a speedy trial” and will put Ohio on “the long road to comprehensive bail reform.”

The Buckeye Institute: Proposed Federal Rule Justifies Economically Reckless Regulations

The Buckeye Institute filed public comments on the Office of Management and Budget’s proposed changes to how the federal government determines the economic and social impacts of proposed federal regulations, which, if adopted, will make it easier to justify economically reckless regulations. “All in all, [the proposed changes] stack[] the deck in the regulator’s favor, making it easier to justify economically reckless regulations that encroach on freedoms enjoyed by American industries and citizenry.”

The Buckeye Institute Testifies Before Congressional Committee

The Buckeye Institute testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, a subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. In his testimony, Andrew M. Grossman, a senior legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute, highlighted the “use and abuse of ‘sue and settle’ tactics in litigation against the government,” which Grossman noted, “seeks to compel [federal] agency action, set agency priorities, and (in some instances) influence the content of regulations or other agency actions.”;

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Should Join the Flat-Tax Revolution

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio Senate Finance Committee on the tax reform policies in Ohio House Bill 33, Ohio’s biennial budget noting that “the country is in the midst of a flat-tax revolution,” with nine states already abandoning progressive, graduated income taxes and five more poised to join the revolution. Buckeye urged the Senate to take this “golden opportunity to enact overdue, comprehensive tax reforms and join a flat-tax revolution.”

The Buckeye Institute: The Ohio Senate Can Put #StudentsFirst with Universal School Choice

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Education Committee on the K-12 education policies included in House Bill 33, Ohio’s biennial budget, which would expand important school choice options to more Ohio families. Buckeye called on the Ohio Senate to “make all students eligible for Ohio’s most successful school choice program” and highlighted its analysis that found “many working-class families would still be ineligible” for EdChoice under the budget passed by the Ohio House.

The Buckeye Institute: Remaking Ohio’s Higher Education System to Meet 21st Century Needs

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Higher Education Committee on some of the policies in Ohio House Bill 151 and how to reshape Ohio’s higher education system to meet the needs of the 21st century. Buckeye urged lawmakers to “give vouchers directly to students rather than simply subsidizing colleges,” noting this would harness the “transformative strength of a free market that empowers students and incentivizes universities to compete for students and state dollars.”

The Buckeye Institute: Ohio Needs a Responsive Education Bureaucracy to Keep Pace with 21st Century Opportunities

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House Economic and Workforce Development Committee on the policies in Ohio Senate Bill 1, which reform the State Board of Education and Ohio Department of Education to put students first and better prepare graduates to “earn a living, afford a house, [and] support a family.” Buckeye warned that “continued underperformance in K-12 education will mean a weaker workforce” and urged lawmakers to adopt policies that will improve K-12 education.

The Buckeye Institute: Innovate the Code Policies Save Taxpayers Time and Money

The Buckeye Institute testified before the Ohio House State and Local Government Committee on the policies in Ohio House Bill 76, which will save taxpayers money and time by removing antiquated and redundant regulations from Ohio’s Administrative Code. Buckeye noted that the policies in House Bill 76 continue the work of “former Senate President Larry Obhof and Senator Rob McColley to cut Ohio’s bureaucratic red tape” and urged lawmakers to join ongoing efforts of the DeWine/Husted Administration to cut government red tape and “keep Ohio growing economically.”
