The Buckeye Institute: House Bill 1 and Senate Bill 3 are Complementary Pieces for Holistic Reform

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee on the policies in House Bill 1, which, along with Senate Bill 3, offers a holistic approach to drug sentencing reform. In his testimony, Andrew J. Geisler, a legal fellow with Buckeye’s Legal Center, noted that “House Bill 1 and Senate Bill 3 offer complementary, not competing proposals. Paired together, these two bills will remove some barriers that Ohio law creates for those on recovery’s road to employment and redemption.”

The Buckeye Institute: Connecting Ohio to Broadband is Essential for the Future

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee on the policies in House Bill 13, which would expand access to broadband internet service to underserved areas of Ohio. In his testimony, Greg R. Lawson noted that the pandemic has “highlighted the importance of high-speed broadband access” for telehealth, online learning, internet commerce, and teleworking. Unfortunately, many areas across Ohio—particularly rural areas—do not have access to this vital tool.

The Buckeye Institute’s Robert Alt Testifies in Favor of Ohio Senate Bill 3

Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, lent his expertise and testified before the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee in favor of Senate Bill 3, which would reform Ohio’s drug sentencing laws to better serve justice and treat those suffering from addiction by applying sensible best practices. In his testimony, Alt urged to adopt Senate Bill 3 saying that Senate Bill 3 would “enhance Ohio’s standing as a national leader in criminal justice reform and ensure our criminal justice system treats all Ohioans fairly.”;

The Buckeye Institute: Eliminating Needless Regulations Expands Opportunities for Ohio’s Small Businesses

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on the policies in House Bill 669, which would permanently allow restaurants and bars to offer alcohol on their carryout and delivery menus. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Greg R. Lawson wrote, “By permanently allowing Ohio restaurants and bars to offer alcohol on their carryout and delivery menus, House Bill 669 throws a needed lifeline to the small, local businesses and their employees struggling to survive COVID-19’s economic shutdown.”

The Buckeye Institute: Policymakers Should Resolve Differences and Immunize Businesses from COVID-19 Lawsuits

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee on the policies in House Bill 606, which would provide businesses and workers with immunity from COVID-19 related lawsuits. In his testimony, Buckeye’s Andrew J. Geisler urged policymakers to resolve the differences between Senate Bill 308 and House Bill 606 as soon as possible, writing, “Waiting several more months to reconcile the bills will keep Ohio businesses in a state of uncertainty as they try to reopen and recover.”

The Buckeye Institute: Expanding Broadband is Critical for Ohio

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Finance Committee on the policies in House Bill 13, which would expand access to broadband internet service to underserved areas of Ohio. The testimony pointed out that “although many communities and households have multiple broadband providers…there are still many across Ohio—particularly in rural areas—that do not,” and “[w]ithout plans to deliver broadband service throughout the state” many communities and families will be left behind.

The Buckeye Institute submitted written testimony to the Ohio House Insurance Committee on the policies in House Bill 679, which would improve access to health care and lower costs by permanently expanding telehealth. In the testimony, Buckeye urged policymakers to “expand telehealth access without hobbling its potential to improve outcomes, lower costs, and promote future innovations.”
